Yoga Therapy

Definition:

At the February 2020 Board of Directors meeting The International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT) approved this updated definition of yoga therapy:

"Yoga therapy is the professional application of the principles and practices of yoga to promote health and well-being within a therapeutic relationship that includes personalized assessment, goal setting, lifestyle management and yoga practices for individuals or small groups."

Lisa adds that yoga therapy is a transformational practice intended to promote constructive self-awareness, enhance capacity to cope and grow in beneficial directions to our optimal ability, and to experience the fullness of life while feeling supportively resourced.

Yoga recognises the essential relationships between all aspects of life and the bi-directional influences of the universal and personal, nature and nuture, the tangible and the subtle. Yoga therapy weaves together the rich resources of philosophy and practice as they have historically been applied in the context of a teacher-student relationship where the needs of the student are paramount.

Yoga Therapy in Practice:

Lisa provides personalised yoga therapy that reflects her scope of practice as a clinical psychologist and yoga therapist. In keeping with her training and experience, Lisa integrates the ancient and the modern ways of understanding human suffering and desire for growth. Lisa views yoga therapy as a method for fostering development and healing that nurtures, reveals, and integrates the whole self. Practice elements include breath centered asana, pranayama, relaxation, and meditation tailored to the needs, conditions, interests, and priorities of the person on the day.

Sessions begin with a centering practice and check-in. Lisa blends psychotherapy and yoga therapy approaches to identify concerns and patterns, and encourage self-reflective awareness, within the context of compassionate curiosity. Practices guided in session and given as home practice will be chosen based on priorities identified in the session.

Getting Started:

Lisa will send a brief Health Information form to be completed and returned by email attachment at least 24 hours prior to the first session.

The first session will be 90 minutes in order to discuss information provided in the Health form, and to gather additional information about how you stand, move, and breathe. A short initial practice will be developed and taught in the session. The practice will be scribed so you can use it to practice at home.

Follow up Sessions:

Follow up sessions are usually 60 minutes, but 90 minutes is available upon request. The frequency of sessions is determined by mutual agreement based on client preference. The content of sessions also varies according to needs identified on the day.
